LINCOLN, Neb. – As Nebraska’s legislative session moves toward critical budget deadlines, District 47 State Senator Paul Strommen is emphasizing the behind-the-scenes collaboration and trust that he says are essential to completing the complex state budgeting process.

Last week, Strommen outlined the technical steps of the budget process. This week, he focused on the human element—highlighting the need for cooperation among senators to manage a system that spans more than 90 state agencies.

“With so many moving parts, it’s difficult to see the full picture and make well-informed, strategic decisions,” Strommen said. “That’s why strong relationships with colleagues are crucial.”

Strommen praised the work of the Appropriations Committee in closing the budget shortfall faced earlier in the session. He said teamwork, open communication, and mutual respect are key to navigating the challenges of building a balanced budget at the state level.

He also acknowledged the struggle for efficiency and transparency in a system not originally designed for it, calling it both the greatest challenge and greatest opportunity for lawmakers.

The Revenue Forecasting Board will meet Friday afternoon to issue its final economic assessment ahead of the session’s end. The Appropriations Committee must present its budget proposal to the full Legislature by Day 70, and the proposal must be approved by Day 80 of the 90-day session.

Strommen encouraged constituents to stay engaged and continue sharing their feedback on legislative matters.
