Husker notes: Nebraska finishes spring with sweep of South Dakota State in Ord

ORD, Neb. - The Nebraska volleyball team posted a 25-18, 25-19, 25-17, 25-19 spring match win over South Dakota State in front of a sold-out crowd of 1,750 at Ord High School on Saturday afternoon. The Huskers capped their spring season winning all eight sets they played.
Harper Murray had 12 kills, seven digs, five blocks and two aces to lead the Huskers. Andi Jackson added 11 kills and 10 blocks. Rebekah Allick posted eight kills and nine blocks. Teraya Sigler chipped in six kills and four digs. Skyler Pierce added six kills and three blocks, and Taylor Landfair provided five kills and four blocks.
Campbell Flynn played the whole match at setter and finished with 44 assists, eight digs, four kills and four blocks.
Laney Choboy tallied nine digs, while Maisie Boesiger chipped in eight.
The Huskers hit .317 for the match and held South Dakota State to .015. Nebraska tallied 15 blocks in the match.
Set 1: The Huskers fell behind 8-2 as the Jackrabbits terminated four of their first five swings while the Huskers had two kills and three errors on their first nine swings. After a timeout, the Huskers ripped off an 8-0 run served by Sigler to go up 10-8. Flynn recorded two kills and a block with Jackson, while Landfair and Jackson each posted kills. NU led 13-9 before SDSU went on a 4-0 run to tie the score 13-13. But the Huskers benefitted from two SDSU mistakes and got two straight blocks by Landfair and Allick to go up 17-13. With the score 20-18, Sigler had a kill and Landfair had a solo block before another Sigler kill ended the set, 25-18.
Set 2: Allick and Pierce combined for three early kills to spark a 4-1 start. Jackson had a kill and block with Flynn before another Pierce kill made it 9-5. SDSU pulled within 11-10, but Hunter had a kill and Allick had a solo block to make it 13-10. Back-to-back kills for Allick and Jackson started a 5-0 run that put the Huskers up 18-11. Murray and Hunter also had kills, and Jackson and Murray posted a block. But South Dakota State answered with four straight kills to pull within 18-15. Murray kept the Huskers pushing forward with a pair of kills, and Jackson and Allick each added one for a 22-19 lead. NU finished off the set with three straight blocks by Allick - two with Pierce and one with Hunter - to win 25-19.
Set 3: Nebraska jumped out to a 12-2 start with Murray recording two kills, a block and two ace serves. Jackson, Flynn, Murray and Pierce recorded kills to take the Huskers to a 17-7 lead. The Huskers closed out the set on top, 25-17, hitting .407 in the frame.
Set 4: The teams battled back and forth to a 10-10 tie. Then Allick and Pierce had a block, Murray notched a kill, and the Jackrabbits misfired to give NU a 13-10 lead. After a timeout, Allick served an ace, and Jackson and Murray had a block to make it 15-10. Another block by that duo and a kill by Jackson pushed the advantage to 19-14. But the Jackrabbits scored four in a row to cut it to 19-18. NU answered with two kills and a solo block by Landfair, and a kill by Allick to go up 23-18. NU closed out the match with a 25-19 win.
Bolin's Walk-Off Single Evens Series with Gophers
Nebraska evened the series against Minnesota with Robby Bolin’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning, as the Huskers won 5-4 against the Gophers in front of a season-high crowd of 6,785 on Saturday afternoon at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.
Nebraska (23-24, 10-13 Big Ten) scored five runs on nine hits, while Minnesota (22-23, 8-15 Big Ten) recorded four runs, eight hits and an error.
Bolin was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI, while Devin Nunez went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Tyler Stone drove in three runs and homered in a 1-for-3 afternoon, and Cayden Brumbaugh, Gabe Swansen, Dylan Carey and Will Jesske tallied one hit apiece.
Ty Horn surrendered four runs on seven hits across six innings while striking out six and walking none. Tucker Timmerman improved to 1-1 on the season after dealing three scoreless frames with one hit and a strikeout.
The Gophers scored the first run of the afternoon behind three hits in the top of the second inning. Minnesota had runners on second and third with one out after a single and double down the left-field line. An RBI single to the right-center alley gave the Gophers a 1-0 lead through two innings.
A two-run homer into the left-field berm extended the lead to 3-0 for Minnesota in the top of the third inning.
Nebraska evened the score with a trio of runs behind two hits in the bottom of the fourth. The Huskers had runners on first and second with one out after Brumbaugh reached on a fielding error and Swansen’s single to left field.
Stone locked the game at three by blasting a 412-foot three-run homer over the wall in right-center field.
Nunez began the bottom of the fifth inning with a full-count walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Hogan Helligso. A wild pitch moved the freshman to third, before Bolin lifted a 1-0 pitch down the left-field line for an RBI double to give the Big Red a 4-3 lead through five innings.
The Gophers answered immediately in the top of the sixth to tie the game back up at four. A two-out single and a stolen base had a runner on second, while an RBI single to left field plated the tying run for the visitors.
After a clean slate in the top of the seventh, Timmerman blanked the Gophers in the eighth and ninth innings to send a 4-4 game into the bottom of the ninth inning.
Carey opened the bottom of the ninth with a full-count walk, while Jesske lifted a single to left field to put runners on first and second with one out. Helligso was plunked on the first pitch to load the bases for the Big Red.
Facing an 0-2 count, Bolin laced an RBI single through the right side to plate Carey and give Nebraska a 5-4 walk-off win on Saturday afternoon.
Nebraska and Minnesota conclude the series tomorrow afternoon at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park. First pitch between the Huskers and Gophers is set for 1:02 p.m. on B1G+.
Huskers Lock Up Series Win in Front of Sellout Crowd
The No. 20 Nebraska softball team drew a sellout crowd of 3,021 and downed the Maryland Terrapins, 9-2, on Saturday afternoon at Bowlin Stadium. With the win, NU claimed the series over UMD, its sixth conference series win of the year.
The crowd of 3,021 was a new program attendance record, besting the mark of 2,699 that was set earlier this season against Indiana. It was also the first sellout in Bowlin Stadium history. The Big Red also reached 400 runs on the season, which ties the school record set in 2015.
Jordyn Bahl notched a double in the fifth inning to put her at 36 extra-base hits on the season, which is a new school record. Ava Kuszak added two RBIs and a triple, while Abbie Squier had two hits – a triple and a double. Samantha Bland, Olivia DiNardo and Hannah Camenzind each had two hits on the day.
Kylee Magee (7-4) grabbed the win in the circle after tossing 4.0 scoreless innings with only two hits. She also logged three strikeouts. H. Camenzind pitched the first 3.0 innings and allowed two runs, neither of them earned. Keira Bucher (2-7) took the loss for the Terrapins.
Nebraska improved to 37-12 on the season with a 16-5 mark in conference competition, while Maryland fell to 18-30 (3-18 Big Ten).
Maryland struck first with a two-run top of the first after taking advantage of a Husker error.
NU got on the board in the bottom of the first. Bland singled then stole second, and crossed the plate on a DiNardo bloop single.
In the bottom of the fourth, Squier walked and advanced to second on a Bella Bacon sacrifice bunt. She went to third on a fielding error and scored on another Terrapin error, which put L. Camenzind at first. Bahl walked and L. Camenzind went to second before a Bland single scored L. Camenzind. Bahl and Bland both crossed the plate on a Kuszak triple. NU led 5-2 after the inning.
Squier tripled in the bottom of the fifth and scored on a Ava Bredwell single. Bredwell then stole second and scored on a Bahl double to make the lead 7-2.
Kuszak kicked off the bottom of the sixth by reaching on an error, then went to third on a H. Camenzind single. Squier doubled to score Kuszak and send H. Camenzind to third, and H. Camenzind scored on a Bacon sacrifice fly to lock up the 9-2 win.
NU will face the Terrapins tomorrow, May 4 in the series finale starting at 11 a.m. (CT). The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network and can be heard across the Huskers Radio Network.
Postgame Notes
- The Huskers reached 400 runs on the season, which ties the school record set in 2015. NU got to 400 runs in 49 games, which is the fastest it's happened in program history.
- Nebraska has now won six Big Ten series this year. The Huskers did not lose a Big Ten series in 2025.
- The Huskers had two triples in today’s game, courtesy of Ava Kuszak and Abbie Squier. The last time NU had two triples in a game was March 13, 2022 against Long Beach State.
- Today’s crowd of 3,021 is a new program attendance record. The previous record of 2,699 was set on April 19 this season against Indiana.
- Today’s sellout was the first in Bowlin Stadium history.
