Chappell snowplow duo wins state roadeo, will represent Nebraska at nationals

CHAPPELL — Two snowplow drivers from Chappell will represent Nebraska on the national stage after claiming the top spot in the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s Annual Snowplow Roadeo.
KSNB reports Jim Paulsen and Justin Polk of Chappell took first place at the state competition, held Thursday at the Nebraska Safety Center in Kearney. Competing in a series of timed challenges simulating real-life winter storm scenarios, the duo edged out fellow District 5 operators Ryan Kozal and John Saxton of Gordon, who finished second.
Both teams will now advance to the national competition at the APWA Western Snow and Ice Conference, scheduled for Sept. 24-26 in Loveland, Colorado.
“We did some background things, studying for the test and things like that,” Polk said. “The driving is the easy part; the whole thing is hard to put together.”
The annual event begins with regional competitions across NDOT’s eight districts. From there, top teams advance to the state level, where the best of the best are chosen to represent Nebraska.
“There’s a lot that goes into knowing how to clear snow and how to attack a winter storm,” said NDOT Assistant Division Manager Ben Merchant. “Every storm is a little different. These operators really have to use their judgment.”
NDOT Director Vicki Kramer praised the event for showcasing the skills and commitment of Nebraska’s snowplow drivers.
“Every winter, our crews work tirelessly to make sure the roads are safe and open,” Kramer said. “Today, our teams showed just how seriously they take that responsibility, while also having a little fun. We’re proud to have Jim and Justin representing Nebraska.”
