Car reported stolen in Colorado found in Hay Springs, driver arrested on multiple charges

HAY SPRINGS, Neb. - A 49-year-old Hay Springs woman is facing multiple charges after authorities tracked a car reported stolen in Colorado to a bar in Sheridan County.
Shannon Barron is charged with two felonies—possession of a controlled substance and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person—as well as three misdemeanors: resisting arrest, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and driving under the influence.
According to court documents, the Englewood Police Department in Colorado alerted Sheridan County authorities on July 12 about a 2024 Subaru Crosstrek that had been rented through Turo, a peer-to-peer car-sharing platform, and never returned. Working with the vehicle’s owner, police tracked the car as it was leaving Chadron, Nebraska.
Deputies located the vehicle outside the Outlaw Bar and Saloon in Hay Springs. When a Sheridan County sergeant attempted to arrest the driver—identified as Barron—she allegedly ignored commands and resisted. A Taser was deployed during the arrest.
Court records state Barron, who appeared to be under the influence, denied stealing the vehicle. Officers reported smelling marijuana near the vehicle and conducted a search. Inside, they say they found a loaded handgun near the driver’s seat, a switchblade knife with a 3¾-inch blade, marijuana, two syringes with methamphetamine residue, and an open container of Fireball whiskey.
Barron, who was previously convicted of felonies, is prohibited from possessing firearms. She also allegedly refused to submit to blood alcohol testing at Chadron Community Hospital, where she was taken for treatment of a head injury sustained during the arrest.
While Barron was originally also arrested for theft, she wasn't charged for that crime.
She is expected back in court on Aug. 21.
