OSHKOSH, Neb. — The Garden County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to stay vigilant after a series of thefts, trespassing incidents, and burglaries across the county and surrounding areas, with one suspect still on the run.

Deputies recovered a stolen pickup from Sheridan County on Aug. 19 that had been concealed in a tree line on a farm property. With help from the Nebraska State Patrol and Nebraska Game and Parks, multiple buildings were cleared, but a male suspect known by the alias “Anthony Rains” was not located.

Authorities say one female suspect, identified as 33-year-old Darla Smith, was taken into custody Aug. 13 by the Grand Island Police Department. Smith was stopped in a stolen vehicle and allegedly gave a false name. Officers reported the vehicle contained multiple firearms, ammunition, and burglary tools, including DeWalt, Milwaukee, Stihl, and Echo equipment. The items have since been linked to additional crimes.

The at-large suspect is described as a white male, about 5-foot-2, with light blonde hair. Witnesses reported seeing a suspicious vehicle between Aug. 9 and 12 north of Garden County and along Highway 92 near Lewellen. Officials believe homes and properties that appeared seasonal or temporarily unoccupied were targeted, including farms and ranches.

The sheriff’s office is urging residents to secure homes, sheds, and outbuildings, and to report any suspicious activity or signs of forced entry.

Anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts is asked to call 911 or contact the Garden County Sheriff’s Office at (308) 772-3540. Authorities warn the public not to approach or confront the individual.
