Nebraska aiming for more explosive plays, deeper running back room
LINCOLN, Neb. - Nebraska Head Coach Matt Rhule says teams can make their biggest jump from week one to week two and Nebraska’s offense would like to see that happen in a few areas.
Offensive Coordinator Dana Holgorsen says he’d like to see more explosive plays and a more depth at the running back spot. In Nebraska’s 20-17 win over Cincinnati, running back Emmett Johnson received 32 touches including 25 carries for 108 yards in the run game.
“Just with his veteran presence, and the way it looked, he just kept going… I don’t regret that, we did what we had to do to win the game, but that can’t keep happening,” Holgorsen said. “[Kwinten] Ives has to get going…. Mekhi [Nelson]’s got to get going.. I don’t care who we play this week, that’s got to change.”
The Huskers longest play was a 24-yard completion to wideout Nyziah Hunter. As Nebraska aims for more explosive plays, Quarterback Dylan Raiola says he has a role in doing just that.
“My role is to read the defense and see if it allows to push the ball down the field, and if not, get the ball into play,” Raiola said. “Routine plays lead to X plays and X plays lead to first downs and first downs lead to touchdowns.”
Nebraska’s two touchdowns were dished out to transfers Hunter and Dane Key, and Holgorsen says, they came in situations where a year ago, Nebraksa would have struggled.
“We punched it in twice in man-to-man situations and we didnt do that last year,” Holgorsen said. “Those guys had the abilities to win one-on-one’s… Very pleased with that and they both made good plays in the end zone.”
Nebraska’s home opener is set for this Saturday night hosting Akron at 6:30 CT.
