Yuma County, Colo. man arrested after woman stabbed, beaten southeast of Vernon
VERNON, Colo. - A Yuma County man has been arrested following a violent assault southeast of Vernon that left a woman with severe stab and beating injuries, according to the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said the incident happened early Saturday, Sept. 13, when the victim was brought to Wray Community District Hospital. The woman who transported her initially claimed the injuries were caused by a vehicle crash, but hospital staff quickly determined the wounds were consistent with an assault.
Deputies later found a red Chevy pickup at the scene on County Road D.D. with visible blood evidence. Investigators said the attack began in and around the truck and continued as the victim and suspect traveled on foot before being picked up and taken to a private residence.
The sheriff’s office identified the suspect as Cory Korf, who was later located by deputies on Sunday, Sept. 14, around 12:05 p.m. He was found hiding in the back seat of a relative’s vehicle and taken into custody without incident.
The sheriff’s office said the joint SPEAR team was activated due to the violent nature of the crime and Korf’s history of three prior similar incidents.
The victim’s condition has not been released. The case remains under investigation.
