WASHINGTON - Nebraska’s three Republican congressmen issued statements today regarding a government shutdown.

Rep. Smith said Democrats don’t want the country to move forward while they make ideological demands.

Rep. Bacon said Democrats are not working with Republicans on a continuing resolution the way Republicans worked with President Joe Biden.

Rep. Flood said the Democrats are demanding $1.5 trillion in additional spending to cater to their far-left base. He said re-opening the federal government will get Washington working for the American people again.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The government shutdown has begun. And it’s plunging the U.S. into a fresh cycle of uncertainty.

President Donald Trump and Congress failed to strike an agreement to keep government programs and services running by the overnight deadline.

Roughly 750,000 federal workers are expected to be furloughed, and many offices will be shuttered.

Trump vows to “do things that are irreversible, that are bad” as he seeks to punish Democrats. Trump's Republican administration has called for mass firings. Democrats picked this fight as they demand funding to save health care subsidies that are expiring and sending insurance costs soaring. Republicans have refused to negotiate. More voting is expected Wednesday.
