KIMBALL -- The Kimball Student Council organized a successful Powder Puff Volleyball event to kick off homecoming week.

Students, parents, faculty, staff, and community members gathered at Kimball Jr./Sr. High School on Sunday for a night of food, drinks and volleyball.

The games consisted of four teams of students and one team of teachers, with the winning team being mostly made up of seniors.

Activities Director Jaclyn Burks said: “It’s a good community builder for within our school, it creates a lot of excitement for the week, the kids look forward to it and talk about their teams for the month leading up to it, so everyone gets really excited for it. It's just a really fun event that our kids like to do.”

This was the first year hosting the event on a Sunday rather than in the middle of the week when people’s schedules are busier and students are tired from a long day of school.

“I would say we had a pretty good turnout; we hit exactly 133 tickets.” Burks said. “I think we will probably do this next year because the kids liked that it wasn’t in the middle of the week.”

Banner Capital Bank sponsored 133 meals by Rosita’s Food Truck and Dirty Lil’ Swigs, which turned out to be the exact number of people who came, so everyone ate for free.

Tonight is Pink Out Night for the volleyball games starting at 4 p.m.

The school is partnering with Kimball Health Services for a food drive for the Kimball Food Pantry, as well as a raffle and silent auction as a benefit for Cynthe Staehr, a former teacher, who is fighting breast cancer.

“We’re hoping for a big turnout tonight so we can raise some money for her,” Burks said. “She is a former teacher, and her husband is Keith Staehr, and that’s who our football field is named after; they were pretty prominent in the school system many years ago.”
