Chase County shines at NSAA State Cross Country Championships

KEARNEY - Western Nebraska athletes delivered strong performances Friday at the 2025 Nebraska School Activities Association State Cross Country Championships at the Kearney Country Club.
In Class B boys competition, Gering senior Axton Stone capped his high school career with a top-five finish, crossing the line fifth overall in 15:59.6. Alliance’s Trevor Zurn followed close behind in seventh at 16:09.3, while Scottsbluff’s Gavin Wemhoff earned a 12th-place medal with a time of 16:22.6.
In Class C, Chase County claimed the girls’ team state championship behind freshman Addison Hauxwell, who finished fourth overall in 19:38.9. Teammates Alayna Smith (14th, 20:26.3), Tessa Smith (18th, 20:47.6) and Elizabeth Hanna (31st, 21:41.4) helped secure the top spot with 67 points, edging Adams Central and Scotus Central Catholic.
In Class D boys, Perkins County’s Elijah Goodell continued his dominant season, finishing runner-up in 16:00.9, just behind Doniphan-Trumbull’s Kaser Johnson.
In Class D girls competition, Gordon-Rushville’s Rarity Cournoyer placed third overall in 19:28.2, while Hemingford senior Dakota Horstman finished 13th in 20:12.6.
Other notable efforts came from Chadron’s Gracie Calkins, who placed 14th in the Class C girls’ race with a time of 19:58.6.
