LINCOLN - Sophomore transfer Claire Johnson scored a game-high 21 points in her Nebraska debut as the Huskers opened their women’s basketball season with a dominant 103-46 win over Northwestern State on Monday afternoon at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

Johnson, a transfer from Samford, sparked Nebraska’s early surge with nine straight points late in the first quarter, helping the Huskers build a 32-10 lead after one period. Nebraska led 59-18 at halftime - the most first-half points in a season opener in program history.

Sophomore Britt Prince added 19 points, while senior guard Callin Hake scored 13 on perfect 4-of-4 shooting with three assists and three steals. Sophomore forward Petra Bozan and junior forward Jessica Petrie each added 11 points, with Petrie also pulling down a game-high seven rebounds.

The Huskers shot 61 percent from the field (36-of-59) and 47 percent from three-point range (8-of-17), while holding the Lady Demons to 36 percent shooting overall. Nebraska also forced 24 turnovers and won the rebound battle 36-26.

Junior transfer Emily Fisher contributed nine points, four rebounds, three assists, and four steals in her debut, while Logan Nissley hit a pair of threes for eight points.

Northwestern State’s Vernell Atamah led her team with 20 points, including 15 in the third quarter.

Nebraska (1-0) returns to Pinnacle Bank Arena on Saturday, Nov. 8, to face Samford at 5 p.m.
