Strommen highlights interim study on early childhood data sharing

LINCOLN - Nebraska State Sen. Paul Strommen says legislative work continues even after lawmakers adjourn for the year, citing an interim study he introduced to improve coordination of early childhood data across state agencies.
Strommen announced progress on Legislative Resolution 205, which directs the Education Committee to examine barriers and benefits to data sharing between the Nebraska Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services. The goal, he said, is to support development of the state’s Early Childhood Integrated Data System.
A public hearing on LR 205 was held in November, where senators heard testimony from state agencies, early childhood organizations and other stakeholders. Witnesses shared recommendations on improving collaboration and using data to strengthen programs serving young children and families.
Interim studies allow lawmakers to research complex issues between sessions. After a resolution is introduced, it is assigned to a committee, which may hold hearings, review information and consult with experts before compiling findings and proposing legislation for the next session.
Strommen said the process helps ensure policymakers are prepared to address issues such as early childhood development and education when the Legislature reconvenes.
