Live Fire training underway at Western Nebraska Engine Academy

GERING -- The 2025 Western Nebraska Engine Academy is underway in Gering.
The event takes place September 13–14.
Firefighters from across the region are participating in hands-on, live fire training designed to simulate a large-scale wildfire incident.
Live fire exercises are actively taking place within the Buffalo Creek Wildlife Management Area this weekend. These controlled burns provide valuable real-world training while reinforcing safety, coordination, and wildfire response strategies.
Residents and travelers in the area may see smoke and visible flames in the Buffalo Creek area on Saturday and Sunday. These activities are part of the planned exercise, with all necessary safety measures and emergency resources on site to ensure the training is conducted safely.
The event also supports the development of position-specific task books for those working toward roles on a Type 3 Incident Management Team. Each participant is working within their area of expertise to complete tasks that contribute to the team’s effectiveness and readiness.
