COLUMBUS, Neb. - A suspect is in custody following a fatal shooting Tuesday night in Columbus.

Columbus Police say at approximately 8:37 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 16, the Joint Communication Center received a report of a female with a gunshot wound at a residence on the cities south side.

Authorities say, responding officers located an adult female with a gunshot wound to the head. She was transported for medical treatment but later died from her injuries. Her identity is being withheld pending notification of family.

During the investigation, officers took Jack Reeg, 25, of Columbus, into custody on charges of second-degree murder, use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony, and terroristic threats.

Reeg was transported to the Columbus Police Department, where he admitted to causing the injury, according to CPD Interim Chief Bret Strecker. He remains in custody at the Platte County Jail as the investigation continues.

“This is a tragic incident, and our department is committed to conducting a thorough investigation,” Interim Chief Strecker said. “We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.”

The investigation is being led by Interim Chief Strecker, Sgt. Aldrich, Investigator Anderson, and Investigator Windle, in coordination with the Platte County Attorney’s Office.
