LONGWOOD, Fla. -- The Chadron State College softball team dropped to 0-10 to begin the season with losses to Florida Tech and Saint Anselm on Saturday in Longwood, Florida.
 
The Eagles were shutout by Florida Tech 6-0 before falling to Saint Anselm 6-3 in the later game.
 
Against Florida Tech, the Panthers scored two runs in the first inning, three in the second and added their sixth run in the bottom of the fourth inning.
 
Despite being shutout, the Eagles had opportunities to score. With two outs in the top of the third inning, CSC gained its first base runner of the game when Angelina Quezada, a junior form Denver, Colorado, was walked.
 
Another walk for CSC put runners on first and second but the Eagles were unable to manufacture anything else, leaving two runners on base.
 
In the bottom of the fourth and fifth inning, the Eagles had the bases loaded with two outs but were unable to bring a run home. A runner was left on first in the sixth inning and one was left on second in the final inning.
 
Tori Haug, a senior from Commerce City, Colorado, received the loss in six innings of work. She allowed 11 hits and six runs, all being earned. The Senior walked seven batters and struck out another five.
 
The Panthers had four different pitchers appear to combine for the shutout victory.
 
Against Saint Anselm, the Hawks scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 4-0 lead. They extended their lead to five in the bottom of the fourth inning.
 
Chadron State scored their first run of the day in the top of the fifth inning against Saint Anselm. Aliyah Rothstein, a junior from Lakewood, Colorado, doubled to left field with two outs. Jessie Henchenski, a senior from Fort Collins, Colorado, immediately followed Rothsteins double with a single down the left field line, scoring Rothstein. Henchenski ended the inning stranded on first.
 
A total of seven batters had a chance at the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning for CSC. Ashland Baca, a senior from Pueblo West, Colorado, started the inning with a double down the left field line.
 
Baca advanced to third when Mackenzi Kroll, a senior from Brighton, Colorado, hit a single to left field. Brady Laucomer was called on to pinch for Baca while Devyn Thornton replaced Kroll on the bases.
 
Thornton immediately stole second before Allie Medrano, a sophomore from Thornton, Colorado, singled to left field, advancing Thornton to third and Laucomer to second.
 
Martinez hit a sacrifice fly with two outs in the inning to bring Thornton home and make the score 5-2.
 
Saint Anselm added one run in the bottom of the sixth before Sophia Brennan, a freshman from Wahoo, Nebraska, singled to left field in the top of the 7^th to bring Henchenski home. Brennan's single was the last hit of the game for CSC, falling 6-3.
 
Kenzi Garner, a junior from Broomfield, Colorado, received the loss on the mound in six innings. The junior allowed 10 hits and six runs, only two being earned.
 
The Eagles start RMAC action a week from today when they face Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado.

Eagles clinch RMAC wrestling title

CHADRON, Neb. -- The Chadron State College men's wrestling team clinched the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship by a 31-10 margin over Colorado State-Pueblo in the Chicoine Center on Saturday night.
             
The Eagles won seven of the 10 matches and earned bonus points in five of them.

t's the first time Chadron State has won the conference title since 1995, when the championship was decided by a late-season tournament. This is the 12^th year that the dual records have been the deciding factor. 

Coach Brett Hunter's team is now 7-0 against RMAC foes with the final dual coming up Thursday, Feb. 15.  Since all the other teams in the conference have at least two losses, the Eagles have claimed the crown.
             
In anticipation that the Eagles would likely win Saturday night, RMAC Commissioner Chris Graham was in attendance and presented the team and its coaches with the championship plaque and banner. 
             
The large number of enthusiastic students and others in attendance joined the nearly 40 team members and others in singing "We Are the Champions" during the championship celebration.
             
The four veterans who fill the lighter weights got the Eagles off to a great start in the dual. Each of them earned bonus points as Chadron State jumped out to a 21-0 lead.
             
Junior Quade Smith pinned his 125-pound opponent in 1 minute and 44 seconds, senior Quen Campbell scored a 21-4 technical fall in the 133-pound match, senior Ethan Leake pinned his 141-pound rival in 4:33 and graduate student Torry Early dominated at 149 pounds by a 14-1 margin for a major decision. 
             
The visiting ThunderWolves won the next three matches, but the Eagles prevailed in the final three.
             
CSC sophomore Keegan Gehlhausen fell behind early against Pueblo senior Donn Greer in the 184-pound battle, but used his length (he's 6-4) to good advantage to post seven points in the second period and win the 12-6 decision.
             
The Eagles unveiled a secret weapon at 197 pounds. Reece Jacobs, a true freshman, found success in his first collegiate varsity match. 
             
Jacobs scored a 14-5 major decision over Pueblo's Ben Gould, a junior who had won 16 of his 19 matches this season.  Jacobs was able to counter Gould's moves and turned them into points several times.
 
Jacobs is not a novice on the mat. Besides being an all-state linebacker at Brown High School at Sturgis, S.D., and receiving a scholarship to play football at CSC, he was a three-time South Dakota state champion wrestler and finished his senior season with a 52-0 record. 

Coach Hunter has been hoping Jacobs could find a way to be a two-sport athlete for the Eagles, and it has happened.           
             
Fifth-year senior Mason Watt wrapped up the dual with a 6-0 victory in the heavyweight match, boosting his season record to 16-2 and giving him 71 career victories.
             
After Watt had picked up Hunter and given him "a ride" around the mat during the victory celebration, the coach noted, "Something like this doesn't happen very often."
