It’s the video seen round the world—the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore falling down after being hit by a cargo ship.

“It’s devastation everywhere here,” Photojournalist James Searls said.

Searls sat down with News Channel Nebraska's Casey Wonnenberg for a one-on-one interview. He’s originally from South Dakota and spent time covering the news in Sioux City. He’s now a helicopter photojournalist at WBAL in Baltimore.

“When we first got there it was almost 4:00 in the morning,” Searls said.

Searls was one of the first reporters on the scene following the deadly bridge collapse.

“It was pitch black dark because obviously there are no lights on a river,” Searls said. "When we first go there the bridge was down. It was on top of the ship. It was just 'Wow.' It’s the Francis Scott Key Bridge. It’s one of the biggest icons of Baltimore. It was just crazy to see it not standing anymore.”

In his more than two decades reporting the news, Searls believes this is the biggest story he’s ever covered.

“Network news, international news all came in,” Searls said.

It's a story that will sadly impact those in Baltimore, and across the nation, for years to come.

“The port is what’s going to hurt the most,” Searls said. "There’s so much money that flows in and out of the port for the country, not just the area.
