FAIRBURY, Neb. -- JayHusker Races are back at the Jefferson County Speedway this weekend.

The races return after the winter months, to be run every weekend for most of the summer.

“So, we get the opening night this weekend on May 3, but then, they get the rest of May off and they’ll start up in June,” said Tommy Denton, Promoter for the Jefferson County Speedway. “Pretty much every weekend.”

Denton said some of the classes have been adjusted for this year’s races.

“We’ve cut back some classes this year so we’re not going to be running as many classes,” Denton said. “We stayed with the JayHusker classes. There are five of those. And we’ll also be running the IMCA mod lights this year.”

And the speedway has seen some renovations during the time off.

“We added a new pit shack. We changed the entrance to the pits. Everybody will see that when they first come in, Saturday night,” Denton said. “We are working on new bathrooms underneath the grandstands. Those probably won’t be done for a couple races.”

Denton is hoping for a good turnout for the first weekend of the races.

“If you’ve never been down here, it’s a family type atmosphere,” Denton said. “It’s so laid back compared to other race tracks. And it is all volunteers that work down here. All of us guys put in our own time down here and take care of the place and run it on Saturday nights.”

Denton said the volunteers are what keeps the show on the road.

“We couldn’t do it if it wasn't for them,” Denton said. “There is just no way we would be able to keep this place open without those volunteers."

The gates open at 4 p.m., with pit passes at $30. Grandstands open at 6 p.m.

For adults 16 and up, prices for the grandstands are $10. For kids five to 15, it's $5 and for four and under, it is free.
