VALENTINE, Neb. -- A bike share station has opened for the summer in Valentine—population of around 2,600 people.

“We call this the world’s most rural bike share station,” said Benny Foltz.

Foltz is the CEO of ROAM Share, a nonprofit that operates several bike shares in the state, including in Lincoln and Omaha.

“Bike share is certainly a growing thing in the U.S.,” Foltz said. "We’re only seeing growth year over year in our programs."

Foltz said that the organization decided to give Valentine a wheel because of the town’s increasing tourism.

“It’s a great way to access a bike if you don’t have easy access to one, or maybe you have friends or family visiting, and you don’t have extra bikes for them,” ROAM Programs Manager Logan Spackman said.

Another reason ROAM chose Valentine is the cowboy trail—a former rail trail that is now used for bicycling, horseback riding, and walking.

“It’s a great way to explore your community, and I also find that it’s a really personal way to explore your community,” Spackman said. "You really get to know the place you’re in when you travel by bike."

In order to access a bike, you open the BCycle app. You can either rent a bike for a day at $10 or a month for $30. However, this month there’s a special on the 24 hour rental.

"It's only $1 for the month of May," Foltz said.

A service that this bike-lover believes will lead to blue skies for both the rider and the community.

“The price of gas is going up,” Foltz said. "The bikes can be used as a form of recreation and exercise. They’re also a lot of fun."
