With the Nebraska primary just days away, here’s some information that you might find helpful.

  1. If you are mailing in your ballot, you’ll want to do that soon. The election office must receive it by the time polls close on Tuesday, May 14. In Cherry County you can also drop off your ballot at the box just outside of the county building at 365 N Main St. In Sheridan County, you can find a drop box in front of the county courthouse.
  2. Nebraska has a new Voter ID law. If you're voting in person, you’ll need to bring a driver's license or state ID with you. If you're voting by mail, you'll have to write your driver's license number or your state ID on the form with your ballot.

Races to watch:

  1. Cherry County commissioner: Three Republican candidates are running for an open Cherry County commission seat. Only one of the candidates will move onto the general election, and no democrats are on the ballot. That means whoever wins the primary election will likely be the next commissioner, unless a write-in candidate wins. The three people running for the spot are incumbent Martin DeNaeyer, Shane Daniels and Greg Hobbs.
  2. Sheridan County commissioner: Three Republican candidates are also running for the open Sheridan County commission spot. Candidates include incumbent Dan Kling, Jim Paul and Mark S. Yardley. Whoever wins will face Democrat Kim Rosane in the general election.
  3. Valentine Community Schools Board of Education member: Seven people are running for three open spots on the school board. Six of the seven candidates will move on to the general election. The seven candidates include incumbent Shane Kime, incumbent Jo Hand, Byron Burdick, Lynde Elliott, James Ward, Michelle Kluender and Tyler Eggert.
  4. Gordon-Rushville Public Schools Board of Education member: Eight candidates are running for three open school board positions. Six of the eight will move forward to the general election. The candidates include incumbent Bobbi Archibald, Warren Scheenen, Ryan Alcorn, Jessica Holston, Chris Heiting, Jason Gantz, Nick Sasse and Amy Lefler.
  5. District 43 Legislature: As the only two candidates running for the District 43 legislature, both Tanya Storer and Tony Tangwall will advance to the general election. However, it will be interesting to see who wins the most votes in the primary.
  6. Valentine Council member: All six candidates will advance to the general election. The candidates are incumbent Kyle Arganbright, incumbent Ross Brockley, Jason Gale, incumbent Kallie Kieborz and Max Eggert.
