VALENTINE, Neb. -- After Cherry County residents received letters about significant increases in property values, the Cherry County Board of Commissioners announced it will hold a special Board of Equalization meeting focused on reviewing valuation protests. Many homeowners are complaining about valuations doubling or even tripling.

The special meeting, which will be at the Cherry County Courthouse on Monday, July 8 at 9:00 a.m., is a workshop for commissioners to review the protests that have been filed. The property valuation protest hearings will be held on June 25 and July 9.

According to the Cherry County website, valuations change because of fluctuations in the market, outside influences on the property, improvements or remodels.

Earlier this year News Channel Nebraska reported on the Nebraska Department of Revenue’s Property Assessment Division’s report highlighting compliance issues within the Cherry County Assessor’s Office.
