GORDON, Neb. – Facing a cancer diagnosis in a rural area can come with added financial burdens, particularly the cost of traveling for treatment. Thanks to a Care-A-Thon hosted by The Twister radio station, cancer patients in Sheridan County will receive much-needed financial support.

Listeners called in on Friday, pledging more than $6,000 to the C.A.R.E. Foundation. The foundation provides financial assistance to local cancer patients for things like gas, lodging, and meals.

“There are many people who can’t afford to go out of town, so it truly impacts the treatment they receive,” said C.A.R.E. Foundation member Nancy Scherr.

Sherry Retzaff and Kathy Willnerd with C.A.R.E. organized the Care-A-Thon. The foundation also held other events last week and surpassed its fundraising goal of $20,000.

C.A.R.E. also has a holiday gift show coming up on Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Gordon City Auditorium. If you’re interested in having a spot or would like more information, contact Shelley Beguin at sbeguin87@gmail.com.
