GORDON, Neb. -- The town of Gordon is in mourning after a tragic crash in Grand Island claimed the lives of four men, all with deep roots in that Sandhills community. Last week a heartfelt funeral procession honored two of the victims.

“Disbelief. I didn’t want it to be true,” said Randi American Horse.

“Of course there’s tears that came out,” said Ricky Gray Grass.

American Horse and Gray Grass organized a memorial run—a run they never imagined they’d have to host.

“We're praying for the families. It was a tragic loss,” said American Horse.

Earlier this month, American Horse and Gray Grass' adopted son, along with three close friends and family members, died in a crash in Grand Island. All four men were originally from Gordon.

“I was with my family. I have 13 people living with me. That was the hardest news to break to them—letting them know what happened to their friend, their brother, their cousin, their nephew,” said American Horse.

Two of those young men, 22-year-old Juan Ramos, a new father, and 18-year-old Alex Ramos American Horse, a recent high school graduate, often took part in similar spiritual runs.

“We're just keeping their spirits alive—that they’re not forgotten. They’re always going to be with us,” said Gray Grass.

And loved ones wanted to run with them one more time as their bodies traveled from the funeral home in Pine Ridge to Gordon City Hall, where the memorial ceremony was held.

“This is closure for a lot of people who ran with us and knew Juan and Alex,” said Randi American Horse.

“It’s not over. Even though they’ve passed on, they’re always going to be with us,” said Gray Grass.

A final run to honor two young men who touched so many lives.

“With support, love and encouragement, we’ll get through it,” said Gray Grass.
