CALLAWAY, Neb. - Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) troopers safely rescued an abducted child after a high-speed chase near Callaway. Saturday afternoon the Columbus Police Department of Ohio contacted NSP about a suspect of a child abduction who may be traveling on I-80 in Nebraska.

The child, a three-year-old, was believed to be with the suspect, 27-year-old Diego Revilla Gonzalez, in a GMC Sierra. NSP troopers located the vehicle near Overton and attempted a traffic stop, but NSP says Gonzalez refused to pull over and sped off, reaching approximately 100 MPH and passing vehicles on the shoulder. Concerned for the safety of the child and other drivers, troopers discontinued the pursuit and alerted other law enforcement agencies.

A short time later, Dawson County 911 received reports of the suspect vehicle heading north on Cozad Road into Custer County and then west onto Highway 40 near Callaway. Troopers deployed stop sticks, but Gonzalez continued to evade capture.

Additional troopers were located at the intersection of Highway 40 and 47 to attempt another deployment of stop sticks. As Gonzalez reached that location, NSP says he drove off the road and at a trooper. The trooper was able to run out of the way to avoid getting struck.

The suspect continued fleeing north on Highway 47 and then west on Highway 92, where NSP says Gonzalez drove off the road, through a fence, and into a field.

Gonzalez, 27, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, child abuse (no injury), attempted assault on an officer, and numerous traffic violations. He was booked into Custer County Jail. The child was medically cleared and placed in protective care pending reunification with her mother.
