GORDON, Neb. - Emil American Horse of Gordon has been an artist for most of his life.

"It's like a gateway to just get away," said Emil.

But even with decades of experience, this project feels different.

“It’s quite an honor to be part of it,” said Emil.

Emil and his daughter Aliyah have been tasked with transforming a massive eagle statue, which used to sit at Chadron State College, into a centerpiece for Gordon’s Veteran Memorial Park.

“Everyone will be able to see it coming into town and leaving town,” said Emil.

The growing park sits along Highway 20 and honors hundreds of veterans from across Nebraska. In addition to the eagle, the park has also added military machinery and new pillars to recognize veterans.

“It’s such an honor to do this for the veterans and to thank them in our own special way for their service,” said Ailyah.

Because together, they’re painting more than just a statue, but a chance to honor the sacrifices of Nebraska veterans.

“That’s the biggest satisfaction I get,” said Emil.
