VALENTINE, Neb. - Kayakers, tubers and canoers could soon have more public access to the Niobrara River. The National Park Service (NPS) has confirmed to News Channel Nebraska that it’s in discussion with the owner of Rocky Ford to possibly buy the property, which sits east of Valentine. However, no agreements have been reached.

“The Park Service has been interested in the property for years because it’s the natural exit point for canoers. Right now there’s no easy public way out,” said Niobrara National Scenic River Superintendent Susan Cook. “There are two places where people can enter, Smith Falls and Brewer Bridge Landing, but no real way out in that area.”

This isn’t the first time the NPS has shown interest in the iconic stretch of the scenic river. In 2016, the agency faced criticism from some local officials, including members of the Niobrara Council, who accused the NPS of attempting to acquire the property in secret. The council, then comprised of 16 members, voted 10-1 to “vigorously oppose” any land acquisitions within the 76-mile section of the Niobrara designated as a National Scenic River.

At a recent Niobrara Council meeting, a couple of members questioned how the NPS would fund the purchase and whether the council could play a role in the discussions.

For now, the future of Rocky Ford remains uncertain as talks continue. Stay tuned to News Channel Nebraska for the latest on this developing story.
