Huge third quarter catapults GACC over Wayne in Mid State Conference Tournament
WEST POINT - The second overall seeded GACC Bluejays started slow, but finished fast in a come-from-behind victory on Monday night over the Wayne Blue Devils 56-38.
Entering the game, GACC (15-2) held the number two overall seed in the tournament, giving them home court advantage for the matchup. Wayne (10-10) took down Norfolk Catholic on Saturday to live another day and take on GACC.
The upset-minded Blue Devils got off to a strong started, scoring the first 7 points of the ball game. The Bluejays got involved late in the first quarter, but Wayne held a 12-10 lead after one.
In the second quarter, Wayne extended its lead to 18-10 before GACC ripped off a 9-0 run to take the first lead of the game.
The Blue Devils stayed in the fight, relying on the outside shot to help put them back on top at halftime, leading 26-21 over the Bluejays.
GACC kicked off the third quarter strong, busting out the full court press and immediately found results.
Wayne struggled to hold onto the basketball, while GACC began hitting shots and converting free throws.
The Bluejays opened up the third quarter on a 21-0 run.
The Blue Devils managed to tack on two free throws before the start of the fourth quarter, but GACC led 42-28 heading into the final frame.
Wayne fought in the fourth, starting the quarter on a 6-0 run. GACC come right back, using their strength to score on the inside and their shooting ability to score on the outside.
The Bluejays survived the upset bid and held on for the 56-38 win, moving onto a matchup with Cedar Catholic on Thursday night in Hartington.
Bluejay freshman Bailey Gerths led scoring with 13 points and racking up 10 rebounds. Addyson Luebbert scored 8 points and Kennedy Baumert added 7 points.
Addison Frank had a good night for Wayne, leading her team with 9 points. Haley Kramer was right behind with 8 points.
