#25 Maryland shoots past Nebraska, ends Huskers four game win streak
LINCOLN, Neb. - A sick and banged up Nebraska ran into a red hot shooting and very physical Maryland squad on Thursday night.
The 25th ranked Terrpains topped Nebraska 83-75, ending Nebraska's four game win streak. Starting post Berke Buyuktuncel was out with an ankle injury, meanwhile leading scorer Brice Williams and three-point specialist Connor Essegian were limited due to illness.
The Terrapins shot 58.5% in the win.
“It’s been awhile since we lost and we have to handle it the right way,” Nebraska Head Coach Fred Hoiberg said. “We have a big game coming up on Sunday, tomorrow will be a mental day, we had a lot of guys play a lot of minutes and had two guys who didn’t participate in our morning film session or our walk through with Connor and with Brice.”
Missing out on Buyuktuncel showed in the paint, as Maryland’s Derik Queen and Julian Reese combined for 41 points in the Terps win - on top of that, the Huskers had limited versions of Connor Essegian and Brice Williams, but Juwan Gary picked up the slack with 22 points in 38 minutes played.
“I told Brice and Connor, ‘I got your back’,” Gary said. “I know those guys weren’t 100%, but I knew I was, so they need my voice, I was going to help them out and was definitely going to do that.”
Nebraska had chances down the stretch, but Maryland hit some difficult shots, part of a near 60% night from the floor. Head Coach Fred Hoiberg was proud of the teams effort, noting sometimes, you just have to tip your cap.
“We just couldn’t get the stop when it mattered,” Hoiberg said. “You can play well in this league and lose… I know I’m going to go back and look at the film, see some things we need to get better at, but also see times when we guarded really well, they just made a tough shot.”
With the loss, Nebraska falls to 16-9 on the year and visits Northwestern on Sunday.
