OMAHA - With two days of the 2025 NSAA Boys Wrestling State Championships complete, 14 wrestlers from Southeast Nebraska have guaranteed themselves a spot on the podium somewhere, and five local athletes will wrestle for a state championship on Saturday afternoon.

Friday night began with 19 athletes still in line for a potential podium spot, and it ended with 14 guaranteed to finish in no worse than sixth place in their respective fields. Altogether, not a bad week for this one region of the state. 

The five athletes that will compete for a state championship on Saturday are: Merrick Johnson of Beatrice (B175); Zaiyahn Ornelas of Wilber-Clatonia (C120); Cooper Stokebrand of Tri County (C215); Wyatt Forney of Southern (D113); and Drake Troxel of Southern (D144).

Saturday's action begins with the consolation finals at 9 a.m., with the third and fifth place matches to follow. Everyone who is returning to wrestle on Saturday is assured of a spot on the final podium somewhere; Saturday's matches will all determine who stands where on those final podiums. The state championship matches will be contested starting at 3 p.m. in Omaha - there will be a total of 56 state champions crowned by the end of the day Saturday, and five of them could be from Southeast Nebraska schools.
