Potter-Dix, Bridgeport lead area schools to state after district speech titles

CAMBRIDGE, Neb. — Potter-Dix and Bridgeport high schools are sending students to the NSAA State Speech Championships with district titles in hand after commanding performances at their respective meets over the weekend.
Potter-Dix captured the District D1-6 team championship in Cambridge with a meet-best 246 points, edging out Paxton and South Platte. The Coyotes qualified a large group for state, including Jaxson Chase and Monique Trejo, who won Duet Acting, Kyle Lenstrom in Serious Prose, Amanda Waggoner in Persuasive Speaking, and Dru Weimer, who qualified in Informative Speaking. The team also took first in Oral Interpretation of Drama with team members Alexia Shoemaker, Cayli Spencer , Kolby LaBeau, Kyle Lenstrom and Sawyer Knoll.
Bridgeport earned top honors in District C1-6 at Perkins County with 198 points, powered by multiple gold medal performances. Katie Eckhardt and Kendal Deaver won Duet Acting, while Alexis Liras, Coote Mulloy, Elizabeth Higgins and Mara Soto claimed first in Oral Interpretation of Drama. Soto also won Poetry, and Eckhardt added a win in Program Oral Interpretation. Bridgeport qualified in nearly every event, fending off strong challenges from Perkins County and Broken Bow.
In Sidney, Gering dominated the District B-6 meet with 334 points, advancing several students to state, including multiple-event qualifier Aphia Boyd and Natalie Peterson, who won both Extemporaneous and Persuasive Speaking. Ogallala and Sioux County also advanced several competitors.
The 2025 NSAA State Speech Championships are held March 26-28 at Kearney High School.
