SPEARFISH, S.D. – Chadron State won 19 events, including 13 wins by the men, as the Eagles largely dominated their two regional RMAC rivals at the Scott Walkinshaw Open and Multi, hosted by Black Hills State University in Spearfish on Saturday and Sunday.

The Eagle men and women each won team scoring, with the men racking up 262 points and the women scoring 202. Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines were also in attendance at the meet.

Three Eagle athletes tallied two individual event wins each. Ryan Clapper swept the 100 and 200 meter dashes, running the former in 10.69 seconds and the latter in 21.44 seconds. With Clapper's 200 time in the finals and a 10.57 in the 100 prelims, the sophomore achieved the fastest times by a Chadron State athlete in both events this season.

Indoor All-American Chayton Bynes swept the long jump and triple jump. Bynes didn't quite hit his season-bests from the Jack Christiansen Invite, which saw him set the outdoor triple jump school record, but Bynes's 15.43 meters (50-7.5) in the triple jump and 7.06 meters (23-2) in the long jump were plenty to earn the meet win.

On the women's side, freshman Camila Salvucci earned a double in the triple jump and 200 meters. Salvucci leapt 11.80 meters (38-8.75), then raced a season-best 26.90 seconds in the 200.

Other running event winners on the men's side included Diego Perez (400 meters, 50.11), Creighton Trembly (110 hurdles, 14.47), Nicquaine Henry (400 hurdles, 54.37) and Kyle Shirley (10,000, 33:40.03).

The Eagles also won both relays, with the crew of Esosa IyengunmwenaChristopher Cormier, Clapper and Trembly taking down the 4x100 and Iyengunmwena, Henry, Cormier and Jacob Jefferson winning the 4x400.

Freshman Trace Hanchett earned another event win in the javelin and exceeded 200 feet for the second time, coming in at 61.79 meters (202-9), just six inches off his season-best that was the farthest CSC throw in nearly 25 years.

Hanchett's performance led another strong showing for Eagle throwers. Parker Gonser earned three top-three finishes, winning the shot put and taking third in both the discus and the hammer throw. Indoor national qualifier Christopher Jennings won the hammer, came second to Gonser in the shot put and placed fifth in the discus.

On the women's side, Wheatland, Wyoming freshman Laynie Goertz won the 100 meters in 13.06 seconds and came second to Salvucci in the 200, crossing the line in 27.15. Jamaican athlete Shantae Morgan earned an event win in the 400, racing a lap in 1:03.53.

The Eagle women finished 1-2 in the 10,000 meter run, with junior Lydia Peters besting sophomore Katelyn Beshara, as well as in the high jump, where junior Megan Baloun finished ahead of sophomore Allison Beard

Thrower Ashlyn Tapio had a trio of top-four finishes, as the South Dakota native placed second in the hammer, third in the discus and fourth in the shot put while competing in her home state.

Chadron State track and field has two more competitions remaining until the RMAC Outdoor Championships in Golden, Colorado on April 25-27. The Eagles will compete at the site of those championships when they head to Colorado School of Mines for the Kit Mayer Classic next Friday and Saturday.

Eagles Win Two, Earn Series Split With Mines

GOLDEN, Colo. – Chadron State came from behind twice to seal a well-earned series split with Colorado School of Mines, winning 5-3 and 7-6 on Sunday at Joe Coors, Jr. Field in Golden.

The Eagles weathered a three-run Mines first inning to score the final five runs of game one before using a four-run sixth inning to eventually take a 7-3 lead in game two and hanging on as Mines pulled within a run in the final frame.

Lauren Zimmerman highlighted the Eagles' offensive performances with a four-RBI night, including a key, tiebreaking three-run home run to give CSC the lead in Sunday's second game.

The Eagles also received much improved pitching in the circle. Tori Haug rebounded from a three-inning start Saturday to throw a complete-game victory for the Eagles in game one, allowing just three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts against no walks.

In the second game, Kenzi Garner battled for six-plus innings, allowing two earned runs across her first six innings of work. Belle Akins came on out of the pen for the final three outs in the seventh, earning her third save of the season.

After the 2-0 day, Chadron State sits at 14-24 overall and 10-22 in RMAC play. Mines falls to 13-29 overall and 12-19 in the RMAC.

Mines struck immediately in the first game, hitting a three-run home run to take a 3-0 lead, but Chadron clawed back. The Eagles took advantage of a two-out dropped fly ball that allowed Katelyn Czerpak to reach and pinch-runner Elia DeLozier to score before an Aliyah Rothstein triple brought home a second unearned run.

Chadron State tied it in the third inning on an RBI double from J'lyssa Martinez, then took the lead in the fourth, manufacturing a run on a Sydney Loyet walk, Czerpak sac bunt, Rothstein single and Jazlyn Arvizo sacrifice fly before adding an unearned insurance run in the sixth.

Haug's pitching held the lead, as the senior faced just one batter over the minimum over the final three innings and had two strikeouts in the sixth inning on her way to improving her record to 6-12.

In game two, the Eagles had four of their first five batters collect hits in the first inning. Rothstein singled to lead off the game and Zimmerman doubled her over to third before Ashland Baca and J'lyssa Martinez singled home runs.

Trailing 3-2 in the sixth, CSC put together a four-run rally, all with two outs. With pinch-runner Kendall Petty on third, Aliyah Rothstein worked a walk to extend the frame before Jazlyn Arvizo poked a single over the second baseman's head to tie the score. Zimmerman followed with the biggest hit of the night, sending a 2-1 pitch over the wall to straightaway center field for the senior's team-leading 10th home run of the season, giving CSC a 6-3 advantage.

The Eagles added an insurance run in the seventh on a Sydney Loyet sacrifice fly and ended up needing it. With a 7-3 lead entering the final inning, Garner allowed a leadoff double followed by a two-run blast to RMAC home run leader Cassidy Chvatal. The Eagles brought in Akins, who gave up a solo home run to the first hitter she faced, cutting the Eagles' lead to one.

Despite the leadoff homer, the freshman held her nerve. Akins retired each of the next three batters, two by strikeout, to punctuate the undefeated day for the Eagles. Akins' three saves are now tied for third in the RMAC.

The Eagles will play at home for the first time in nearly a month next weekend, when they host Fort Lewis on Saturday and Sunday, April 12-13. First pitch Saturday is scheduled for noon.

Olson, Kiger Lead CSC At Loveland Rodeo

LOVELAND, Colo. –  It was a slow weekend for the Chadron State College rodeo team at the Colorado State University rodeo in Loveland.

The only CSC entries placing among the top six in their event were Tanner Olson and Cinch Kiger in bareback riding. Olson finished fifth while scoring 65 and 75 points on his two trips out of the chute for a total of 140 points. Kiger was sixth with 69 and 68 points for a 137 total.

Bridget Romey of Hot Springs, South Dakota, who the previous weekend at the Eastern Wyoming College rodeo won the barrel race that had 97 entries, did well in the first go-round at Loveland, placing fourth with a 15.48-second run. Romey's bid for another high finish ended in the short go-round, however, when she and her horse knocked over a barrel in Sunday's finals and were assessed a five-second penalty.

Two CSC cowgirls were among the 10 finalists in breakaway roping, which had 103 contestants at the CSU rodeo. Mary Gibson of Havre, Montana, caught her first calf in 2.9 seconds and Josie Anthony of Crofton, Nebraska, made her catch in 3.0 seconds. Neither of them were able to lasso her calf in the finals.

The fourth of the five spring rodeos in the Central Rocky Mountain Region will be this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April 11-13 at Casper College.
