City of Kimball anticipates name change to portion of S Hwy 71

In the Tuesday night meeting, the city council discussed extending Chestnut St. down to I-80.

From 9th St., Chesnut St. turns into S Hwy 71; however now that the portion of road is in the city’s jurisdiction, the name will change.

KIMBALL -- The Kimball City Council discussed a name change for the portion of S Hwy 71 from 9th St. to I-80 that was relinquished from Kimball County to the city.

City Administrator Annette Brower said in discussions with the Nebraska Department of Transporation there are concerns with the street remaining as S Hwy 71.

“The concern is there is a legality if they were to send State Troopers to an address on S Hwy 71, emergency personnel would respond to south of I-80 as S Hwy 71,” Brower explained. “We can call it anything we want, but we can no longer call it S Hwy 71.”

The consensus of the city council is to extend Chestnut St. to include the additional six-block portion.

The city first needs to prepare an ordinance then the city council can make an official vote in a future meeting.
