WAYNE, NE - The Auburn Bulldogs dropped a heartbreaker to the Wayne Blue Devils in the District C-5 Championship Friday, 2-1. With the win, Wayne moves on to play in the State Tournament that starts Saturday, May 17, in Papillion.

The scoring didn't get under way until the fourth frame. With two out, Auburn's Jackson Warner ripped a triple to put the Bulldogs in business. Christian Gage followed with an RBI single to make it 1-0.

Still trailing 1-0 in the sixth, Wayne's Drew Reinhart led off by reaching on an error. A ground out and a single put Reinhart at third base, where he was then able to score on a ground out from Alex Rodriguez to tie the game. 

In the bottom of the seventh, Parker Patefield led things off with a single. With two down, Reinhart stepped up and laced the game-winning single up the middle to end it, 2-1. 

Gavin Redden went seven innings for the win, allowing the one run on four hits with ten strikeouts. The Bulldogs' Mason Schultz also went the distance, taking the loss in 6.2 innings of action. Schultz coughed up one earned run on six hits with four whiffs. Neither pitcher walked a batter.

Auburn's season comes to an end with a record of 14-11, while Wayne is now 18-9 as they head to State.
