RUSHVILLE, Neb. - A 21-year-old man has been sentenced to about a year in prison after leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase that ended with a burning vehicle and a high-risk arrest in Sheridan County in January. Ryan White Eyes will receive credit for 123 days already served.

According to court documents, the Oglala Sioux Tribal Police began pursuing White Eyes, who was wanted on charges, in Pine Ridge. The chase crossed state lines into White Clay, Nebraska, where Sheridan County authorities deployed spike strips to stop the vehicle.

Despite the spikes disabling the car, White Eyes continued to flee, swerving at patrol vehicles and into oncoming traffic. Authorities say he kept trying to drive even as the vehicle broke down, spewing smoke, debris, and car parts across the road.

When White Eyes refused to follow commands from a sergeant, officers conducted a high-risk stop. The vehicle eventually caught fire while he was still trying to avoid arrest. After some time, he exited the vehicle and was taken into custody. A Nebraska State Patrol trooper extinguished the flames.

As part of a plea deal, White Eyes pleaded guilty to felony operate motor vehicle/avoid arrest. In exchange, two misdemeanors and two infractions were dropped.
