Valentine high-speed chase: Winner man facing charges

VALENTINE, Neb. - A Winner, South Dakota man is facing charges after allegedly leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase through Valentine, damaging a parked vehicle and resisting arrest. Tyler Vanden Hoek, 37, is charged with criminal mischief and willful reckless driving-1st offense.
On March 2, a Valentine police officer noticed a black pickup with a nonfunctional headlight. According to court documents, the officer started following the vehicle, which accelerated at a high speed. After the officer activated emergency lights to pull the vehicle over, court documents allege that Vanden Hoek didn’t stop, but instead continued speeding.
“The vehicle was unable to stop at the stop sign located at the intersection of 3rd and Wood St., traveling through the intersection at a high rate of speed causing the vehicle to leave the roadway becoming what appeared to be airborne before coming back down and continuing north on Wood St. at a high rate of speed. When the vehicle struck the intersection of 3rd and Wood St. causing the vehicle to become airborne, a spare tire that was located on the back of the vehicle was ejected from the flat bed of the vehicle, striking a parked vehicle and causing damage to the parked vehicle,” reads an affidavit.
Once Vanden Hoek eventually stopped driving, authorities say he didn’t listen to law enforcement’s commands, resisted arrest and smelled like alcohol. The affidavit also states that the officer found two open White Claw containers in the center console, along with empty and full alcohol containers scattered throughout the vehicle.
