THEDFORD, Neb. - Six Nebraska counties in the Sandhills are standing up for their people as they are accused of being non-compliant.

On Thursday, the Department of Homeland Security released a list of over 500 “sanctuary jurisdictions” across the country. This list included ten counties from Nebraska.

The departments website claims Arthur, Blaine, Grant, Greenley, Hooker, Howard, Logan, Loup, McPherson, and Thomas counties are “deliberately and shamefully obstructing the enforcement of federal immigration laws endangering American communities.”

The Sandhills Area Sheriff’s Association released a statement on Friday, speaking out against this list, saying six of the counties accused are compliant.

“This list is not accurate,” The SASA said in a news release, “These counties are NOT sanctuary jurisdictions. In fact, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in North Platte considers each of these counties to be completely supportive, cooperative, and compliant with the handling of federal immigration laws.”

The SASA says that these counties were mistakenly put on this list because of the lack of detention facilities in the county. The listed counties do work with other counties who do have detention facilities.

These counties have made contact with Governor Pillen to attempt to get this list corrected.
