Investigation underway after body discovered near railroad tracks in Sidney

UPDATED: Authorities identified the human remains found Tuesday in a Sidney drainage ditch as 24-year-old Mattea Scheuerman of Greensburg, Indiana, formerly of Sidney. An autopsy has been scheduled and the investigation remains ongoing.

SIDNEY, Neb. — Authorities are investigating after a body was found Tuesday evening along the BNSF railroad tracks in Sidney.
Cheyenne County Sheriff Adam Frerichs confirmed to News Channel Nebraska a body was discovered shortly after 8 p.m. on the south side of the tracks near the intersection of 7th Avenue and Maple Street. Investigators were on scene late into the evening, but no further details have been released at this time.
A nearby resident told NCN a group of children made the discovery while walking through a tunnel that runs beneath the tracks and were visibly shaken by what they found.
