State lawmaker from Seward to seek another term

Seward, Neb. —Senator Jana Hughes of Seward will seek re-election to her Legislative District 24…which includes Seward, York, Polk, and part of Butler counties.
Hughes said, “Together, we’ve made strides in reducing property taxes, strengthening our schools, and defending Nebraska’s values.”
As a senator, Hughes has led conversations for meaningful property tax relief. In 2024 Hughes proposed an alternative tax proposal that would have lowered school levies thus decreasing tax rates over a decade.
She also sponsored and passed Vape Regulation to help ensure that any vape product sold in Nebraska will be registered with the state and will not allow any items that are targeted to children with cartoon like characters or likenesses of celebrities.
Hughes advocated for bills like the Online Age Verification Act and limiting cell phone usage during school hours as well as the Stand with Women Act that requires that Nebraska public school competitive sports students are required to play on the team that matches to their biological sex.
Hughes serves on the Education and Natural Resources Committees in the legislature. She and her husband, John, live in Seward County and have three children.
