New Archway exhibit honors first coast-to-coast motorcyclist
KEARNEY, Neb. - A new exhibit and memorial has recently rolled in a Central Nebraska Museum, and it highlights a unique pioneer who made history over a hundred years ago.
The new exhibit at the Great Platte River Road Archway Museum is focused on George Wyman, who is the first person to cross the United States on a motorized bicycle back in 1903.
The new exhibit features photos and stories from his groundbreaking journey, including about his stops along the Platte River.
Museum staff say that Wyman's daring expedition helped pave the way for future motorists...
"when George Wyman set out for this expedition, some of the challenges that he had is that people don't realize that there wasn't even roads back then. And so he would have to go through mud, heavy terrains.
He followed the railroad track a lot and almost got hit by a train three times."
A separate historical memorial is located outside of the Archway Museum, with the exhibit located on the top floor of the museum. Museum officials say they hope to grow the exhibit by adding additional artifacts and information to the space.
