STERLING, Colo. - Kash Steffens is already making waves in the show ring - and on the radio dial.

The soon-to-be third grader at Peetz Elementary is participating in his first year of 4-H at the Logan County Fair & Rodeo in Sterling, proudly representing the Plateau Pioneers 4-H Club. On Thursday morning, he’ll take to the ring to show his rabbit, fittingly named “Big Boy,” in honor of his favorite radio station - 987 The Big Boy.

“Because I like listening to The Big Boy and he’s our biggest rabbit,” Steffens said.

Steffens will compete in the Junior Rabbit Show at 8:30 a.m. Thursday, which includes showmanship, breed classes and meat pens, followed by the Tiny Tot Rabbit Show in the Pavilion.

Kash said his first 4-H experience has been both fun and educational.

“It’s been really fun to raise him,” he said. “What it’s like to raise meat rabbits is you have to feed them very carefully, because they can’t be overweight or below weight. He started at a low weight, but then he caught up—and went overweight.”

Kash is the son of Matt and Brooke Steffens of Peetz. His rabbit show will be part of a busy Thursday lineup at the fair that also includes goat shows, poultry events and agricultural mechanics judging.

“4-H has helped me gain responsibility and it’s fun,” Kash added.

The fair continues with the Bud Van Berg Memorial 4-H/FFA Junior Livestock Auction scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday. Arena events include the PRCA Rodeo on Thursday and Friday, the Jo Dee Messina and Clare Dunn concert on Saturday and the demolition derby on Sunday. The carnival runs through Sunday. Tickets and schedules are available at lcfair.org.
