SIDNEY, Neb. – Sidney police officers are already in uniform on Sunday mornings, taking part in additional hands-on training to sharpen their skills and prepare for any situation.

According to the Sidney Police Department, the voluntary sessions begin at 6 a.m. and are held outside of officers’ normal shifts and required training. The department said the extra effort reflects a commitment to continuous learning and readiness.

This week’s training focused on defensive tactics, emphasizing ways to control a subject with the least amount of force to reduce the likelihood of injury for both officers and the public.

The weekly sessions also cover a wide range of advanced skills, including firearms training, arrest control, vehicle operations, team movements and strategic planning for target locations.

“These trainings require officers to give up personal time, sleep, and time with their families,” Police Chief Sam Lovato said. “Their commitment shows that for us, the learning never stops.”

The department said the extra preparation helps ensure officers are equipped to respond effectively and safely in the community.
