NORFOLK, Neb. — Two steers died and a Norfolk man was injured in a crash involving a semi pulling a cattle trailer on Tuesday.

It happened around 8:10 p.m. at the intersection of 13th St. and Benjamin Ave. in Norfolk. A news release says Austin Miller, 25, of Minnesota was was southbound on 13th St. when the traffic signal turned red. Miller told officers that, due to being loaded with cattle, he did not want to brake hard and attempted to proceed through the light. Witnesses confirmed the signal had turned red before the semi entered the intersection.

According to the release, a 31-year-old Norfolk man drove his car into the intersection with a green light and then attempted to avoid the collision. The man was initially pinned in his car but was able to free himself. An ambulance transported him to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police cited Miller for violating a traffic signal.

The semi was hauling 32 fat steers. Two animals died in the crash. The remaining cattle were safely transferred to another trailer. Cleanup required removal of spilled manure. The road fully reopened at 12:34 a.m.
