CHADRON, Neb. - The Chadron State College Rodeo will take place at the Dawes County Fairgrounds in Chadron this weekend--Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 5-7. There will be plenty of action.  It’s anticipated there will be nearly 500 entries from a dozen colleges.

The primary performances will be at 7:00 Friday and Saturday evenings, followed by the championship go-round at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, featuring the top 10 contestants in each event from the earlier sessions.

Because there will be so many contestants, there also will be two lengthy sessions of slack that are open to the public without charge.  They will begin at 1:00 p.m. Friday and 8:00 a.m. Saturday.

This year’s Chadron State team includes about 30 members, evenly divided between men and women.  Lane Day, a former CSC cowboy now in his fourth year as the rodeo coach, believes this year’s team has excellent potential.

Day said several rough stock contestants have joined the men’s team and noted that a number of the returnees did well while competing at pro rodeos this summer.  The latter includes Cinch Kiger of Overton, Neb., who tied for first in bareback riding, and Bridget Romey of Hot Springs, S.D., who won the barrel race, both at the Old West Trail Rodeo in Crawford on July 3-4.

Another CSC bareback rider, Tanner Olson of Gordon, was just a freshman last year when he placed second in that event at the Chadron State rodeo.

In addition, CSC senior Pepper Rhyne of Craig, Colo., won the tie down roping at “Nebraska’s Big Rodeo” at Burwell this summer in 9.8 seconds.
