Gettysburg, S.D. — Police in Gettysburg, South Dakota are urging parents to talk with their children after a high school student found a syringe on a sidewalk.
The syringe was turned over to the police department. Tests later confirmed the liquid inside contained fentanyl.

Officers say if children come across something suspicious or dangerous, they should not touch it and instead call police.
Fentanyl is a powerful synthetic opioid. Just 2 milligrams — about the size of a pencil tip — can be deadly, according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. It remains the leading cause of overdose deaths in the United States.
