STERLING -- A Sterling man is in custody following a following a dispute over child custody.

Julio Lechuga of Sterling, Colo., was arrested on charges including False Imprisonment, Criminal Mischief and Child Abuse.

At 9:35 a.m. Saturday, September 7, Sterling Police officers were dispatched to a report of a disturbance in-progress between a man and a woman. The incident occurred in the 300 block of Hays Avenue.

Dispatch informed officers disturbance was physical in nature and that a male party had thrown himself onto the hood of a moving vehicle. As officers responded, updates indicated the male remained on the hood was was actively striking and breaking the windshield.

Officers located the vehicle in the 1000 block of West Main Street. The male, later identified as Julio Lechuga, 34, of Sterling, was still positioned on the hood of the vehicle. Officers contacted Lechuga, who was still sitting on the vehicle when officers arrived. According to the Sterling Police Department press release, he was yelling that his daughter was being kidnapped.

Officers determined through investigation that the girl was not being kidnapped. She was being picked up by her biological mother. A review of court records from Missouri and Colorado showed Lechuga did not have legal custody of the child. The Logan County Department of Human Services was also contacted and assisted with the incident.

Lechuga was arrested on charges of False Imprisonment (Class 2 Misdemeanor), Criminal Mischief (Class 2 Misdemeanor) and Child Abuse-No Injury (Class 2 Misdemeanor)
