SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. — A Mitchell man was killed early Tuesday morning after his vehicle struck the rear of a semi-truck trailer at a Scottsbluff intersection, according to police.

The crash happened at 5:58 a.m. Sept. 9 at Avenue I and Highway 26. Investigators said a 1995 Freightliner semi-truck and trailer, driven by Alfredo Chavira, 50, of Scottsbluff, was eastbound on Highway 26 and had stopped at a red light. When the signal turned green, the semi began moving forward into the intersection.

At the same time, a 2000 Oldsmobile Bravada, also eastbound in the right lane, struck the rear of the trailer. The driver, identified as Josh Martin Span, 36, of Mitchell, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Chavira was not injured.

Span was a member of the Mitchell Volunteer Fire Department, which confirmed his death in a statement Wednesday morning.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Josh Span,” the department wrote. “Josh was a member … for just over half a year and made as many calls as he possibly could. He was a good, caring man that loved being there for his family and his community in their times of need. He will be missed by both his family as well as his first responder family.”

The crash remains under investigation by the Scottsbluff Police Department.
