Cougar notes: WNCC volleyball starts conference play Thursday
SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. - The Western Nebraska Community College soccer teams are finally off the road traveling as they host a pair of conference contests this weekend at Landers Soccer Complex.
As for the Cougar volleyball team, they have two more road contests before they will be home next Tuesday, September 23 when they face Northeastern Junior College.
In the meantime, the Cougar volleyball team open up South conference play with road trips tonight (Thursday) and Friday at Southeast Community College in Lincoln and then a trip to North Platte to face North Platte Community College on Friday.
Both Southeast and North Platte already opened conference play as they faced Northeastern Junior College earlier in the week. North Platte fell to NJC on Tuesday 25-14, 25-16, 25-21 and then Southeast fell to the Plainswomen on Wednesday 25-8, 25-14, 25-20.
NJC is ranked 5th in the latest NJCAA poll at 13-3. North Platte is 5-9 overall while Southeast is 5-13.
As for the Cougar soccer teams, they will be looking for a strong home stand as they begin a string of six straight home matches. The Cougar women will have seven straight home matches.
The home season starts Friday when Otero College comes to Scottsbluff followed by Trinidad State College on Saturday. The women’s contests both days kick off at 1:30 p.m. with the men’s contests slated for 4 p.m.
The Cougar men are sitting third in the conference right now at 2-1-1 with seven points, while Otero and Casper are on top of the standings with unblemished records. Otero is 3-0 while Casper is 2-0.
The Cougar men are the second highest scoring team in the conference as they scored 17 goals this season. Casper has scored 20 while Otero and Northwest have scored 16 goals. Otero is 4-2-1 overall this season while WNCC comes in at 2-2-4.
The Trinidad State men are 0-5-1 this season and have scored just two goals all season while allowing 20 goals.
On the women’s side The women come into the weekend with a 2-6 record and 1-3 in the conference. Otero is just 1-4 on the season and 1-2 in the conference. The Rattlers have scored six goals this season while WNCC has plated nine goals.
Last weekend, Otero split a pair of contests where they defeated Northwest College 2-1 and then fell to Central Wyoming 1-0.
WNCC, last weekend, topped Lamar 4-3 before falling to Northeastern Junior College 3-1. Otero lost to NJC 4-3 on September 6.
The WNCC and Otero match on Friday will start seven straight home contests for the Cougar women. After Friday, Trinidad State comes to Landers Soccer Complex and the Trojans are 0-6 overall and 0-3 in conference play. The Trojans have yet to score a goal as they have allowed 53 goals in their six matches.
After this weekend, the Cougars will have one match next weekend on Saturday, September 27 when Laramie County Community College comes to Scottsbluff for afternoon tilts.
