Colorado sports notes: Buffs to debut new live buffalo mascot against Wyoming
The latest recruit on Deion Sanders' roster weighs in at 700 pounds and runs the 40-yard dash as fast as she wants.
Colorado’s new live buffalo mascot will make her debut at Folsom Field on Saturday night against Wyoming. She's officially named Ralphie VII, although a unique nickname is soon to come after her first run.
Ralphie VII is the latest in a string of field-storming live mascot buffaloes, a storied tradition and one of college football's most iconic. The running of the buffalo has been a must-glimpse event at the school for the past 58 years.
The 1-year-old bison steps in for Ralphie VI, who went into retirement before the start of season after showing little enthusiasm toward making the gallop around the field.
“We’re excited to be adding a new Ralphie to the lineage of incredible buffalo that have represented the University of Colorado and have elevated the fans’ passion for our student-athletes," said Taylor Stratton, the director of the Ralphie Live Mascot Program.
A version of Ralphie has been missing from action the past two home games. Ralphie VI — nicknamed Ember — showed a reluctance to make the trip around Folsom Field to the roar of the fans. The plan for Ember will be to join Ralphie V — known as Blackout — on the ranch and do one of her favorite things — take it easy.
The newest member of Sanders' squad is “definitely not indifferent to running,” the release from the school said.
Ralphie VII was a gift from the Beauprez Family, supporters of the university and owners of Eagle’s Wing Ranch located near Steamboat Springs, Colorado.
“Ralphie’s run is iconic and our fans, students, faculty, staff, and alumni take an incredible amount of pride in this tradition which transcends sports,” Stratton said.
Rockies win 7-6 to hand the Angels their eighth straight loss
DENVER (AP) — Brenton Doyle had a tying two-run single and scored the go-ahead run on Ezequiel Tovar's sacrifice fly in a four-run sixth inning as the Colorado Rockies beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-6 on Friday night.
Tyler Freeman had three hits including a double and Hunter Goodman had an RBI triple for Colorado, which snapped a five-game losing streak and improved to 3-14 in September.
The Angels have lost eight straight games.
Goodman's first-inning triple brought Freeman across to start the scoring, and Blaine Crim brought in another on a sacrifice fly.
Christian Moore and Denzer Guzman both went deep in the second inning to bring the Angels ahead 3-2, but Freeman's second hit of the game brought the tying run across for Colorado.
The Rockies bullpen combined for four innings of one-hit ball in relief of starter Bradley Blalock (2-5), who allowed eight hits and six earned runs while striking out four. Victor Vodnik earned his ninth save of the year.
Mitch Farris (1-2) took the loss in his fourth career start, allowing eight hits and seven runs with five strikeouts.
Key moment
After Los Angeles had a three-run fifth inning, the Rockies immediately answered with four runs, including two sacrifice flies.

Hunter Goodwin's 61 extra-base hits are the most in a single season by a Rockies primary catcher in franchise history. He is the third Rockies player since 2022 to have 60 or more extra-base hits in a season, joining Tovar (75, 2024) and C.J. Cron (60, 2022).

Angels RHP Kyle Hendricks (7-10, 5.01) faces Rockies RHP Germán Márquez (3-14, 6.73) in the second game of the three-game series.
Broncos' key free agents Greenlaw and Engram out for Chargers game
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The Denver Broncos will be without two of their key free agent additions when they face the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
Inside linebacker Dre Greenlaw will miss his third game with a thigh injury and tight end Evan Engram will also sit this one out after injuring his back in the Broncos' 29-28 loss at Indianapolis in Week 2.
Greenlaw signed a three-year, $35 million contract with Denver in the offseason despite missing all but two games last year while recovering from a torn Achilles in the 2024 Super Bowl.
Engram signed a two-year, $23 million contract to provide coach Sean Payton with the coveted “joker” player who has positional flexibility.
Engram has just four catches for 33 yards so far.
