Commissioners approve Youth Classic Tournament funding

SIDNEY -- The Cheyenne County Commissioners Monday approved a Sporting Event Grant agreement for the Cheyenne County Community Center.
Tourism Director Kendra Mitchell said the grant helps bring the tournament back to Sidney.
"The Community Center is looking to bring back the Youth Classic Basketball Tournament. It's two years without the tournament being hosted in our community so we're excited to see this back," Mitchell said.
She added they don't have a final team count yet.
Mitchell said the Community Center has applied for grants supporting prior tournaments.
"For history, in 2023, they had a $2,000 grant. In 2024, they were granted $3,000 but had to cancel the event due to multiple circumstances, so they did not get the $3,000 reimbursed. And they did not apply for the 2025 tournament, and this will be for the 2026 tournament," she said.
The grant is to support the Youth Classic Basketball Tournament scheduled for February 27 through March 1, 2026. The grant is in the amount of $2,500.
Mitchell said organizers have returned the tournament days to that of previous years.
"The event is a little bit earlier than usual. It's February 27 through March 1st. They tried moving it later in March a couple years ago and I think that's where they ran into issues, so they moved it back," Mitchell said.
She noted the Youth Classic is hosted by the Community Center and the Holiday Shootout by the high school. The school district did not apply for grant funds this year.
