Illinois man injured after cargo van crash west of Sidney

SIDNEY - An Illinois man was taken to the hospital Friday morning after falling asleep at the wheel and crashing a cargo van along Interstate 80 west of Sidney, according to the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said 67-year-old Orlando Riley of Illinois was driving westbound when he fell asleep, causing the Mercedes cargo van to drift off the roadway into the south ditch. The vehicle drove through a fence, blew three tires and came to rest against an embankment.
Airbags deployed during the crash. Riley was transported by medical ambulance by Sidney Regional EMS to Sidney Regional Medical Center with lower back and abdominal pain.
The crash happened near mile marker 57. The Sidney Volunteer Fire Department, Region 21 Emergency Management and the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene.
