World Boxing Council strips Terence ‘Bud’ Crawford of super middleweight title over alleged failed payments

OMAHA, Neb. — The World Boxing Council released a report saying that boxer and Omaha native Terence “Bud” Crawford has been stripped of his super middleweight title.
Crawford defeated Mexico’s Canelo Alvarez on Sept. 13, becoming the first male boxer to capture three unified division titles. The city of Omaha even celebrated the champ with a parade after the history-making win.
In a release, the World Boxing Council says it first contacted Crawford after he failed to pay mandatory fees after his last two fights.
“The WBC put Champion Crawford on notice regarding his failure to comply… The non-payment of the Boxer’s Bout Fees for his last two fights: against Israil Madrimov and against Saúl Álvarez.”
The WBC says it reached out to Crawford and his manager before action was taken. But WBC says it did not “receive an acknowledgment of receipt nor any response to any of those communications."
Crawford took to social media posting an expletive-filled video giving his thoughts on the situation.
“You can take the f*****g belt. It’s a trophy anyway,” said Crawford.
According to the WBC, Crawford had ample notification and multiple opportunities to respond. Currently, the WBC has not explicitly said it stripped the title, but that it had “no choice but to act” with an executive decision.
Crawford became the undisputed welterweight world champion in 2023.
